Chronic Pain

Physiotherapy for Chronic Pain

1 in 5 people have chronic pain - physiotherapy is highly effective!

Pain education is an important part of treating pelvic pain, back pain and hip pain

since the pelvic area is an area that we often hold our stress. Anxiety, stress and our

thoughts, attitudes and beliefs can perpetuate the pain in our pelvis as well as other

areas in our  body; understanding how our pain system works has shown to be an

effective way of  reducing the threat of ongoing pelvic floor problems.

Understanding more about the pain system has been shown in research to be

one of the most effective ways to relieve chronic pain.

Do I Have a Sensitive Nervous System? Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are my symptoms spreading?

  • Do I have pins and needles?

  • Do I have burning pain?

  • Is my pain increased by small movements?

  • Is my pain increased for no particular reason?

  • Do small things cause flare-ups that can last for days?

  • Do stress and anxiety increase my pain?

  • Is the same pain  starting starting to occur on the opposite side (mirror pain)?

  • opposite side?

  • Do I have pain at night?

  • Do I have difficulty sleeping because of my pain?

If you have answered “yes” to at least two of these questions, you likely have

a sensitive nervous system.

The next step in helping yourself is to educate yourself about persistent pain:

  • There are different types of pain.

  • Understanding the pain system better has been shown to reduce the threat of the

pain you are experiencing, and will help you on the road to desensitizing your

       nervous system.

  • If you aren't sleeping well, addressing your sleep is paramount.

  • Addressing the sensitive nervous system through exercise, stretches, relaxation

and a whole person approach is key.
